We traveled to Kauai in July 2024 with our 4-year-old and I was about 15 weeks pregnant with our second. This trip ended up being the perfect mix of adventure and slow island days—beautiful beaches, incredible scenery, and just enough structure to feel like we experienced the island without overdoing it.
We spent most of our trip on the South Shore near Poipu, then ended with one night at a resort for a relaxing, memorable finale.

Where We Stayed in Kauai
For the majority of our trip, we stayed in a 1-bedroom condo near Poipu Beach—and it was perfect for traveling with a young child.
Our setup included:
- A full kitchen (we made breakfast most mornings)
- Outdoor patio for slow, relaxed starts to the day
- Separate bedroom + pull-out couch for our daughter
- A small community pool
- Access to a larger resort-style pool at the nearby Poipu Beach Athletic Club
Having the extra space and kitchen made a huge difference, especially for balancing early mornings, naps, and downtime.
We ended our trip with one night at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa, which was the perfect way to unwind. A truly stunning property with an amazing lagoon, plus multiple pools, 5 star restaurants and more. Ending there made it feel like a true vacation within a vacation.
Do You Need a Car in Kauai?
Yes—100%.
Kauai is not a destination where you can easily rely on public transportation or walking. Having a rental car allowed us to:
- Beach hop easily
- Explore Waimea Canyon
- Visit the North Shore
- Stop at fruit stands and local food spots
If you’re planning a trip here, I would absolutely consider a rental car essential.
Best Beaches in Kauai with Kids
We prioritized calm, swimmable beaches since we were traveling with a preschooler.
- Baby Beach
- Snorkling at Poipu Beach
- Lydgate Beach
- Sea Turtles at Poipu Beach
Poipu Beach
Poipu Beach Park was our go-to beach almost daily. It was perfect for:
- Calm, protected water
- Easy snorkeling
- Sea turtle spotting
- Occasional sea lion sightings
- Bathrooms and easy parking nearby
It’s one of the most family-friendly beaches on the island and was incredibly convenient from our condo.
Lydgate Beach Park
Lydgate Beach Park was another favorite. The protected swimming area made it ideal for kids, especially when waves elsewhere were stronger. There’s also a playground nearby, which was a huge win.
Baby Beach (Poipu area)
A quieter, more tucked-away beach that was great for low-key mornings and easier water play for younger kids.
Epic Kauai Experiences (That Were Still Kid-Friendly)
Even with a young child and pregnancy, we were able to fit in some unforgettable experiences.
Na Pali Coast Sunset Sail
We booked a sunset sail with Captain Andy’s to see the Na Pali Coast from the water—and it was absolutely worth it. The views are unreal, and seeing the cliffs from the ocean gives you a completely different perspective of Kauai.
It felt like one of those “you have to do it once” experiences.
Waimea Canyon Day Trip
We drove up to Waimea Canyon State Park, often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” The viewpoints are stunning and easy to access, even with a child.
We did a few lookout stops rather than long hikes, which worked perfectly for our stage of travel.
Smith Family River Cruise
We also did the Smith Family river cruise, which was a slow, scenic boat ride through lush greenery ending with a short cultural stop to explore the Fern Grotto. It was very low effort and very kid-friendly.
North Shore Adventure (Haena State Park Shuttle)
We booked the Haena State Park shuttle system to access the North Shore. This is essential since visitor access is limited and requires advance planning.
It allowed us to explore a more remote, dramatic part of the island without the stress of parking logistics.
- Kilauea Lighthouse
Favorite Restaurants in Kauai
Some of our favorite spots from the trip (all linked below in full itinerary):
- Hula Pie at Dukes
- Jojo’s Shaved Ice
- Duke’s Kauai
- The Beach House Restaurant
- Koloa Fish Market
- Puka Dog
- JoJo’s Shave Ice
- Tidepools Restaurant
- Koloa Pizza Kitchen
- Tiki Tzatziki
- Shipwreck Subs
- Passion Bakery Cafe
We also grabbed groceries from Safeway and loved stopping at local fruit stands for easy snacks.

What Didn’t Work / Things to Consider
Na Pali Coast Boat Ride + Seasickness
The Na Pali Coast boat ride can be rough depending on conditions.
Even though our daughter had done well on boats before, she ended up getting seasick during the ride and did vomit. That said, the crew at Captain Andy’s Sailing Adventures were incredibly kind and helpful, and she bounced back quickly and still enjoyed the rest of the experience.
We would absolutely do it again—but it may not be the best first boat experience for kids, as it can be bumpy.
Traveling Kauai with a 4-Year-Old (and While Pregnant)
What worked best for us:
- One main activity per day
- Built-in rest/nap time daily
- Condo stay for flexibility and meals
- Easy-access beaches nearby
- Ending with a resort stay to fully relax
This pacing made the trip feel enjoyable—not exhausting.
Final Thoughts
Kauai is one of those destinations that truly has it all—dramatic landscapes, swimmable beaches, and a slower pace that works beautifully for families.
From mornings at Poipu Beach Park to the cliffs of the Na Pali Coast and the views from Waimea Canyon State Park, this trip struck the perfect balance of adventure and rest.
It’s absolutely a destination we’d return to again—especially with kids.
