I’ve been meaning to post our nursery reveal for the last several weeks. However, I think we can all agree that the last few weeks have been a wild ride. Between the pandemic, the horrible death of George Floyd, the continued pattern of police brutality and subsequent protests, it’s a world I will honestly say I don’t think I expected to birth a baby into. When we found out we were pregnant in October, we had no idea what changes were coming.
I frequently go back and forth whether this is the worst time to have a baby or the best time … I will admit, hunkering down with our newborn and sheltering away from the world doesn’t sound bad some days. Other days, I feel defeated and beaten down by the state of things. I get sad that we missed out on sharing the excitement of new life with our families at our baby shower. I get upset that we won’t be able to have our families visit us in the hospital when she’s born. I get scared wondering about how we’ll manage childcare with an infant during a pandemic. It’s hard not to let all of those frustrations and worries come crashing down on you.
Then I have brighter days. I sit in our nursery quietly and cradle my belly and feel her every movement and think about how we made a little human. How we created new life during a time of chaos and stress. Maybe cheesy, but it’s beautiful to think about. The excitement of meeting her is creeping in every day as I picture what she will look like, how she will feel in my arms, what it will feel like the first time she smiles. It helps to get through the bad days. I also remind myself that baby showers, parties, and frivolous gifts are the least of our concerns right now. The protests happening in and around our city are a great reminder of the MANY privileges we have. It has also further emphasized our resolve to raise her to be aware of those privileges and be an ally to all.
We wanted to share a few snapshots of our nursery reveal, as we’ve had many ask us to share links and tips. For anyone else currently pregnant or recently delivered, we hope it may give you an outlet to channel some of your anxieties and frustrations as it has with us. We will keep it brief, but feel free to reach out to us with any questions.
