Hotel vs. Vacation Rental: How We Navigate Travel with Two Kids
9 trips in 17 months: What we’ve learned about sleep, space, and the “Resort Bubble”
Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links (like the SlumberPod we can’t live without!). If you make a purchase through one of these links, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend gear and places we have personally used and loved with our own family.
| Feature / Need | Hotel & Large Resorts | Vacation Rentals (Airbnb/VRBO) |
|---|---|---|
| Trip Duration | Best for shorter stays (1–4 days) or dedicated “resort bubble” vacations. | Best for longer stays (5+ days) where you need room to breathe. |
| Sleep Logistics | Everyone in 1 room/suite. Requires strategic gear like the SlumberPod and sound machines. | Separate bedrooms (2–3 rooms). Gives everyone privacy and the best overall sleep. |
| Parent Downtime | Limited after kids go to bed (often sitting in the dark or hanging out in the bathroom/balcony). | High. Parents have a separate living area or patio to relax in after 7:00 PM. |
| Meals & Cooking | Dine out or utilize resort restaurants. No cooking, but higher food costs. | Full kitchen available. Essential if you want to prep your own meals or have picky eaters. |
| Amenities & Activities | Built-in entertainment: pools, splash pads, kids’ clubs, and organized activities. | Varies wildly. Usually relies on you finding local activities outside the property. |
We’ve been a family of four for 17 months now, and in that time, we’ve tackled 9 different destinations. We’ve stayed in everything from sprawling resorts to cramped hotel rooms and quiet vacation rentals.
There is no “perfect” choice, but we’ve developed a mental checklist to decide which one fits the trip:
-
The Schedule: Are we exploring all day or “living” at the property?
-
The Duration: If we’re staying 5 days or more, we almost always prioritize a rental with 2–3 bedrooms so we have room to breathe.
-
The Food: Is this a “cook at home” trip or a “let someone else do the dishes” trip? A kitchen is a non-negotiable if we aren’t eating out.
When the Resort Wins (The “Resort Bubble”)

Sometimes, the goal isn’t exploration—it’s ease. When we want a stay where we don’t have to plan a single logistic, we look for a family-friendly resort. Our “must-haves” for a resort include:
-
Kid-Centric Activities: Water parks, scavenger hunts, and kids’ clubs.
-
Dining Ease: Buffets or restaurants with actual kid-friendly menus.
-
Our Tested Favorites:
-
Loews Ventana Canyon (Tucson)
-
Iberostar Paraiso Lindo (Cancun/Playa del Carmen)

The One-Room Survival Guide: How We Actually Sleep

The biggest deterrent for parents booking a hotel is the “lights out at 7:00 PM” trap. When we do a standard hotel room, we have a specific strategy to avoid sitting in the dark in silence for hours:
-
The Room Setup: We always request two beds (Queen or King) and a larger suite if available.
-
The “Room Separator”: Our Slumberpod + Travel Crib is a total game-changer. It creates a dark, quiet “room” for our son within our room.
-
The Routine: Because he’s in the pod, we can still get our older daughter ready for bed and read books without waking him. Even if he has a wake-up, our daughter is a deep sleeper and usually sleeps right through it.
Vacation Rentals: Finding Room to Breathe

We follow a 5-day rule. If we are staying somewhere for more than 5 days, we look for places with more than 1 room. For example, our 5-night stay in Lake Como or our recent Austin road trip. We opted for a 3-bedroom rental.
-
3 Bedrooms: The gold standard. Everyone gets their own space, and the parents get a “living room” to relax in after the kids are down.
-
2 Bedrooms: If we only have two rooms, we put our daughter in her own room and set up the Slumberpod in our bedroom. It’s the perfect compromise.
Bonus if there’s any outdoor patio or balcony!

Our “Can’t-Travel-Without” Sleep Kit
No matter where we stay, these four items come with us to keep the “home” environment consistent:
-
Sound Machine: A absolute must for drowning out hotel hallway noise or thin rental walls.
-
The Slumberpod + Travel Crib: Our son’s dedicated sleep sanctuary.
-
Familiarity: Preferred books, stuffies, and their specific sleep sacks/blankies.

So – are you team vacation rental or hotel??
