Lettuce Wrap Burgers with Sweet Potato Fries

There is nothing better than a perfectly well-crafted burger. We have had many a good burger around town in Dallas, but when a craving hits and we’re trying to stay healthy we opt for this version. Low carb lettuce wrap burgers with sweet potato fries!

Lettuce Wrap Burgers with Grilled Avocado and Sweet Potato Fries

In the summertime, we make the burgers and fries on the grill, which makes cleanup super easy. We toss the sweet potatoes in some olive oil, salt and pepper, and lay them right on the grill! They get a nice charred flavor, and we don’t have to dirty another pan. Definitely a win in our book. We also like to add some avocado, and love throwing a large slice on the grill briefly before adding it to the burger. It just adds a little something special.

If you can’t access a grill, you can sear your burgers on the stove top, just recommend the pan is nice and hot! You can also do the sweet potato fries in the oven, I recommend roasting at 400-425F for at least 20-25 minutes depending on the thickness of your fries.

The key part to making tasty burgers without a bun is to buy good quality meat! Without a buttery bun to hide behind, the taste and quality of the meat is so important. We opt for 80/20 to really get the best flavor. We are so lucky to have found an amazing butcher here in Dallas, called the Meat Shop (if you live here, check them out!!) that only carries local grass fed Wagyu beef and is kind enough to grind our ground beef fresh for us.

Once you have good quality meat, you don’t need tons of spices and ingredients to make a tasty patty. Salt and pepper is all you need for meaty perfection.

We top ours off with tomato, pickle, red onion, grilled avocado, and a simple sauce of mayo, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce. Wrap it up in some butter lettuce and it’s the perfect way to indulge in a tasty burger without the guilt!

Ingredients Method

Ingredients

Burgers
  • 1 pound 80/20 Ground Beef
  • 4 slices Provolone Cheese or cheese of your choice
  • 1 large Avocado Cut in half
  • 1 head Butter Lettuce or baby romaine
  • 8-10 Dill Pickles
  • 1/4 cup Mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons Ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
Sweet Potato Fries
  • 2 large Sweet Potatoes Cut into wedges
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper

Method

  1. Mix ground beef with salt and pepper in a large bowl and form into 4 round patties. Set aside.
  2. Whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce in a small bowl and set aside.
  3. Toss sweet potato wedges with olive oil, salt, pepper, and sugar in a large bowl.
  4. Turn on grill (medium-high heat if using gas).
  5. Lay the sweet potato wedges on first and allow to cook for about 5 minutes on each side.
  6. While sweet potato fries are cooking, you can grill the avocado. Be sure to brush it with some olive oil before adding to the grill to prevent sticking. Sear for about 1-2 minutes or until it appears slightly charred. Remove from grill and set aside.
  7. When potatoes are almost done, add on the burger patties. Cook for about 3 minutes on each side (for medium). Add slices of cheese towards the end to allow to melt.
  8. Add a spoonful of the mayo/ketchup sauce onto a leaf of butter lettuce. Place cheeseburger on top. Add pickle, tomato, and slice of grilled avocado. Top with additional leaf of lettuce and serve with sweet potato fries!
