The Reality of Visiting San Francisco with a Toddler: 48-Hour Realistic Itinerary

San Francisco is iconic, beautiful, and absolutely packed with bucket-list sights. But let’s be entirely honest: navigating those steep hills, unpredictable parking, and crowded tourist zones with a toddler takes a serious game plan.

We wrapped up our one-week California family road trip with a two-day stay in the City by the Bay. We didn’t sugarcoat the tourist traps, we hunted down the best playgrounds, and we ate incredibly well.

If you want a genuine, tried-and-tested look at what actually works (and what to skip!) when exploring San Francisco with a young child, here is exactly how we spent our time.

First things first, download our San Francisco Bingo digital download for a super fun intro to the city for your kids.

Where to Stay:

When tackling San Francisco with a stroller or toddler, your neighborhood choice matters. Avoid the incredibly steep inclines of Nob Hill and aim for flat, walkable, and family-friendly areas. We highly recommend staying near the Marina District or Fisherman’s Wharf (even though the main tourist pier is a skip, hotels like The Argonaut are incredibly kid-friendly and flat!)

Day 1: A Famous View, One Big Skip, and Incredible Dim Sum

After checking into our hotel, we kicked things off with a stroll through the nearby Maritime Garden park, which gave us a beautiful, low-stress view of the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

From there, we walked along Jefferson Street towards Fisherman’s Wharf. Our honest verdict? This area was incredibly touristy and easily our least favorite spot of the entire California trip. If you are tight on time, we would honestly recommend skipping it. We grabbed a quick hot dog and fruit for our daughter Mila, and slowly made our way out of the crowd toward Ghirardelli Square.

  • Where we ate dinner: We had incredible Dim Sum at Palette Tea House in Ghirardelli Square (the Lomo Saltado and custom dishes are fantastic). Afterward, we explored The Ghirardelli Experience to pick up some delicious chocolate souvenirs before heading to bed.

Day 2: The 8:30 AM Bridge Trick & Golden Gate Park

Driving across the Golden Gate Bridge is an experience in itself, but the real win was hitting Battery Spencer Overlook early.

Pro Tip: To avoid nightmare parking at the overlook, go early. We arrived at 8:30 AM and there was only one other car in the lot. We got breathtaking, crowd-free views and great family photos before the rush.

Next, we spent the day exploring Golden Gate Park, which is massive (bigger than Central Park!).

  • Japanese Tea Garden: We went straight here next. Parking was ample and free. We walked the stunning paths and stopped at their small outdoor café for traditional green tea and fortune cookies for Mila. (Note: Entrance is free before 10 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays if you want to time it perfectly!)

  • Koret Children’s Quarter: Thought to be the nation’s first public playground, this was a massive hit for burnout time. We hoped to ride the carousel next door, but unfortunately, it is only open on Saturdays and Sundays, so plan accordingly!

  • The Windmills & Tulips: We did a quick drive-by view of the famous windmills and the Queen Wilhelmina tulip garden before leaving the park boundaries for lunch.

  • Where we ate lunch: We found an amazing Peruvian spot nearby called Mixto Latin Cuisine. The Lomo Saltado and ceviche were delicious, and Mila loved her quesadilla.

  • Have extra time: If you want to bundle your park day with the world-famous California Academy of Sciences (which is right in the park and amazing for toddlers!), make sure to buy your tickets in advance to skip the line

We spent the afternoon driving the hills and exploring the North Beach neighborhood. We grabbed coffee and pastries at Stella Pastry & Café, browsed books at City Lights Booksellers, and let Mila burn off her remaining energy at the Washington Square playground.

  • Where we ate dinner: We finished the night at a local Roman-style pizza spot called Barbara for incredible pizza and Italian cocktails.

Day 3: Cable Cars & Winding Streets

For our final morning, we grabbed a quick bite at a great Brazilian coffee shop near our hotel called Cafe de Casa before tackling a classic San Francisco experience: the cable cars.

We headed to the Hyde and Beach St stop right outside Ghirardelli Square to board the Hyde-Powell route.

Cable Car Logistics: Kids under 4 ride completely free! For adults, single rides are $9. If you plan to ride more than once or hop on the buses, grabbing a 1-Day Visitor Passport gives you unlimited rides on all Muni vehicles, including the cable cars. While you can currently use the MuniMobile App, the city is transitioning all mobile fares to the Clipper App starting August 1st. An even easier option? You can now simply tap your contactless credit card or phone wallet directly on the card reader when you board!

We rode the car down to Union Square to walk around, hopped back on, and took it to Lombard Street to step off and see the famous, ultra-winding street before heading back to the hotel to pack for the airport.

The Verdict

San Francisco with a toddler is completely doable and incredibly fun if you balance the sightseeing with plenty of open park play time, hit the popular overlooks before 9:00 AM, and stay flexible when carousels are closed!
