Tips for Visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium with a Toddler
If you are planning a family road trip along the California coast, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is likely a non-negotiable stop on your itinerary. It is widely considered one of the best aquariums in the world, and for good reason—the ocean-side setting and massive exhibits are absolutely stunning.
But as any parent knows, taking a toddler into a massive, popular attraction can sometimes feel like a gamble. Will they be mesmerized, or will they be overwhelmed by the crowds?
We stopped in Monterey during our one-week California coastal road trip with our four-year-old daughter. The verdict? It was a massive hit. The aquarium is incredibly toddler-friendly, provided you know which exhibits to target to keep little eyes engaged.
Here are the exact highlights our family loved, plus a few practical tips to make your visit seamless.
Our Toddler’s Favorite Highlights
While you could easily spend a whole day wandering through the multi-level exhibits, these were the absolute highlights for our daughter:
-
The Jellyfish: The glowing, hypnotic jellyfish exhibits are at a perfect eye level for toddlers. It was a great, calming spot where she was completely transfixed by the movement.
-
The Hands-On Play Areas: This was a massive win for our stage of travel. The aquarium has fantastic, dedicated touch-and-play zones spread throughout the building. It gave her a chance to be hands-on, splash a little bit, and burn off energy instead of just staring through glass.
-
The “Deep Sea” Feeding Sessions: If you can time it right, do not miss the feeding sessions in the Open Sea exhibit. Watching the divers interact with the marine life was fascinating for her.
-
Hammerhead Sharks & The Giant Octopus: These two heavy-hitters kept her attention held high. The sheer size of the hammerheads gliding past the massive glass windows is unforgettable for a young child.
4 Tips for a Smooth Family Visit
To ensure your visit is more magical than stressful, keep these quick strategies in mind:
1. Buy Tickets Safely in Advance
The Monterey Bay Aquarium operates on online ticket system and can sell out fast—especially on weekends. Do not show up hoping to buy tickets at the gate, just in case. Book your tickets online ahead of time so you can walk right in during your toddler’s peak happy morning hours. Good news is you can get a stamp if you need to leave for nap time and come back in without issues for more exploring!
2. Ditch the Huge Stroller if Possible
While the aquarium is fully accessible, the hallways around popular exhibits (like the Kelp Forest and the Sea Otters) can get tightly packed. A giant, bulky stroller can be tough to navigate through the crowds. If your toddler is not up for walking and you can use a compact travel stroller or carrier, you will find it much easier to maneuver.
3. Take Breaks on the Ocean Decks
When the indoor areas start feeling a bit loud or crowded, head outside onto the beautiful ocean view decks. You get fresh sea air, stunning views of the bay, and a chance to spot wild sea otters and harbor seals playing in the kelp right outside the building. It’s the perfect spot to sit down, recharge, and hand out some snacks.
4. Quick Tip on Lunch
Toddlers and hunger are a dangerous mix. The aquarium doesn’t allow outside food (except for medical/baby needs) and their indoor cafe can get packed. They do allow in/out privileges so you can go grab lunch out on Cannery Row and return after if you want. We grabbed sandwiches from Coniglio Brothers Italian Deli.
Staying the Night in Monterey + Whale Watching
Monterey has so much more to offer than just the aquarium. We stayed the night and enjoyed the wandering Cannery Row, exploring the coast line and even booked a whale watching tour for the following day to continue our ocean exploration! The Intercontinental The Clement Monterey hotel was so ideal for staying with a child and being within walking distance of everything, so if you need a place to stay this is it!!
