When planning a trip to wine country, “kid-friendly” is rarely the first phrase that comes to mind. We often picture quiet vineyard terraces, fragile glassware, and long, slow tastings—environments that usually don’t mix well with energetic toddlers.

Enter Hotel Monverde Wine Experience Hotel, nestled in the rolling green hills of the Vinho Verde wine region near Amarante, Portugal.

During our family trip across Portugal, Hotel Monverde was hands-down one of our absolute favorite stays of the entire journey. It completely redefined what a luxury vineyard retreat could be for parents traveling with young children.

If you’re looking for a relaxing, high-end resort where you can sip world-class Vinho Verde while your little ones are genuinely welcomed with open arms, here is why Hotel Monverde deserves a top spot on your Portugal itinerary.

The Perfect Location: A Peaceful Amarante Countryside Retreat

Hotel Monverde, Amarante Portugal

Hotel Monverde is located in Quinta de Simães in the Vinho Verde region, just about 40 minutes outside of Porto and a short drive from the historic town center of Amarante.

It serves as the ultimate peaceful sanctuary. After navigating the busy cobblestone streets, steep hills, and urban energy of Porto or Lisbon, pulling into Monverde feels like an instant reprieve. The property is surrounded by miles of lush, manicured grapevines, ancient trees, and quiet walking paths that offer breathtaking countryside views.

Note that because of its remote location, it is difficult to reach without a car. We drove from Lisbon and had no issues driving through Portugal, but plan ahead for this if you plan to rely on public transportation.

Family-Tested Rooms: Private Pool Suites & Thoughtful Touches

One of the biggest hurdles of traveling with a toddler or young child is managing nap times, early bedtimes, and shared room space. Monverde solves this effortlessly with their room options.

We stayed in one of their Executive Suites with a Private Outdoor Pool, and it was the perfect set-up for a family of 3.

  • Private Dip Pool: Having our own private pool right outside our door meant we could easily splash around with our daughter without worrying about being loud or bothersome to others. It also meant we could enjoy some time to ourselves outdoors after she had gone down for the evening.

  • Unwinding During Nap Time: When she took her afternoon nap, we were able to relax on our private sun loungers right outside the room, sipping chilled Vinho Verde.

  • Toddler-Approved Cribs: Instead of a flimsy travel pack-and-play, they provided a comfortable, full-sized crib complete with colorful sheets that made our daughter feel right at home.

Wine Tasting Where Kids Are Truly Welcomed

Beautiful view from our room at Hotel Monverde

The highlight of our stay was the resort’s wine tasting experience. Normally, taking a toddler to a formal wine tasting feels like a huge no-no. At Monverde, the staff made it completely seamless.

While we enjoyed our wine and local inspired tapas, the staff warmly welcomed our toddler by bringing out her own dedicated plate of snacks and some books to flip through.

She felt completely included, which allowed us to actually sit back, relax, and savor the experience without rushing.

Resort Amenities Families Will Love

Beyond the wine and the rooms, the resort grounds offer plenty to keep a family relaxed and entertained:

  • Spacious Outdoor & Indoor Pools: In addition to private pool suites, the resort features a large main outdoor pool overlooking the vines, as well as a heated indoor spa pool—perfect if you hit a cooler or drizzly morning in Northern Portugal.

  • Vineyard Walks & Mornings in the Fog: Walking through the quiet grapevines during the misty morning hours was incredibly peaceful. There is ample open, safe space for toddlers to run wild, explore nature, and burn off energy far away from city traffic.

  • On-Site Dining: The resort’s restaurant serves exceptional regional cuisine featuring fresh, seasonal Portuguese ingredients. The kitchen staff is incredibly accommodating with child requests, high chairs are readily available, and room service is a breeze if you prefer a quiet night in after a long day of travel.

Practical Tips for Booking Your Stay at Hotel Monverde

  1. Book a Private Pool Suite if Traveling with Young Kids: If it fits your budget, the suites with private plunge pools offer unmatched convenience for managing toddler nap schedules while still enjoying vacation vibes.

  2. Rent a Car: Having your own rental car is essential for reaching Monverde and exploring nearby gems like historic Amarante or the gardens at Quinta da Aveleda.

  3. Combine it with Porto: Monverde makes the perfect 2- to 3-night countryside extension to a city stay in Porto.

Final Verdict: Is Hotel Monverde Worth It for Families?

Hotel Monverde Wine Barrels

100% yes. Hotel Monverde Wine Experience Hotel strikes the rare, perfect balance between luxury wine-country relaxation for parents and warm, stress-free hospitality for kids. It was a standout favorite of our entire trip to Portugal, and a property we recommend without hesitation to any family traveling through the region.
