A Festive Fall Day Trip to Leavenworth Oktoberfest (Pregnancy-Friendly!)

When originally planning our Seattle babymoon, I dreamed of crisp autumn hikes through the Cascade Mountains. But as I reached 29 weeks pregnant, I realized rigorous mountain trails were no longer in the cards.
Instead, we pivoted to a low-impact day trip: a drive out to Leavenworth, a Bavarian-style village nestled in the mountains that hosts a massive, Oktoberfest (Weekends of October 2-3, 9-10, 16-17 2026)! Even without partaking in the beer, it proved to be the most festive, scenic fall outing.
If you want the full details check out full Seattle Babymoon itinerary coming later this week!
How to Get There: Driving vs. Guided Day Tours
The journey from Seattle to Leavenworth takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. You have two great options depending on your travel style:
Option 1: Self-Drive via Highway 2
If you rent a car, take Highway 2, which is widely considered the most scenic route. Leaving early is key to beating festival traffic!
Option 2: Stress-Free Guided Day Tour (No Car Required!)
If you want to skip the hassle of renting a car and avoid expensive downtown hotel parking fees in Seattle, taking an organized day tour to Leavenworth is a brilliant alternative! You can simply rely on airport transfers/public transportation in the city and let a guided tour handle the driving. Plus, these tours typically include a stop at the famous Espresso Chalet along the route and give you plenty of free time to explore the village.
Scenic Pitstop: Espresso Chalet
Whether driving yourself or taking a tour, stopping at Espresso Chalet in Gold Bar is a must-do along Highway 2.
-
The Vibe: Home to a famous 14-foot wooden Bigfoot statue (perfect for a photo op!).
-
The Views: Their back deck offers breathtaking, jaw-dropping views overlooking Mount Index and Bridal Veil Falls. Grab a hot drink and soak in the mountain air.
Arriving in Leavenworth: Parking & Festivities
We arrived around 11:30 AM. Rather than fighting for street spots, we found $20 day-parking at a local winery near town, making the short walk into the center of the village effortless.
Do You Need Oktoberfest Tickets?
As we walked into town, a parade of people dressed in traditional lederhosen and dirndls passed by to the sound of lively German music.
Babymoon Tip: We chose not to buy official tickets to the fenced-off festival grounds since I wasn’t drinking beer. The entire town embraces Oktoberfest, so walking the main Bavarian streets gave us all the festive atmosphere, costumes, and music without needing a wristband!
Shopping for Keepsakes & Holiday Decor
Leavenworth is packed with whimsical, alpine-inspired boutiques.
- The Gingerbread Factory: This cute bakery has fun decor and display gingerbread houses. It’s a great spot to pick up sweet treats or small souvenirs.
- Kris Kringl: We made a point to visit the village Christmas store to buy personalized holiday ornaments stamped with our soon-to-be-born baby’s name. Collecting ornaments during our travels is one of our favorite traditions!
- The Wood Shop: For adorable wooden toys! We picked up a cute wooden train made of the letters of our daughter’s name
- A Book for All Seasons: For book lovers, what’s better than wandering an independent bookstore with a coffee in hand?
German Lunch & A River Walk
Lunch at Rhein Haus
For lunch, we joined the line at Rhein Haus Leavenworth. Even without a reservation on a busy festival weekend, we scored a table in under 30 minutes.
-
What We Ordered: Warm soft pretzels, giant bratwursts, and refreshing non-alcoholic beer. The service was fantastic!
Wenatchee River Waterfront Walk
To digest our meal, we took a slow, peaceful stroll along the trail following the Wenatchee River. It offered a lovely, quiet escape from the bustling town center.
Heading Back to Seattle
Before hitting the road around 3:00 PM, we grabbed coffee and a sweet treat for the drive at Little Red’s Espresso & Bakery.
-
Traffic Note: The drive back into Seattle took significantly longer due to afternoon traffic bottlenecks on Highway 2, so build extra buffer time into your schedule!
Final Thoughts
Leavenworth in the fall is pure magic. While it was a wonderful babymoon day trip, we left already talking about bringing our kids back in the winter when the entire town transforms into a Christmas wonderland. It is definitely high on our bucket list to return and stay at one of the cozy village inns!
