There’s nothing quite like a quick weekend getaway to reset, catch up with a friend, and explore a vibrant city. On a recent weekend trip to Chicago, I set out with one goal: see as much of the Windy City as possible without taking a single day off work.
While many of my trips revolve around family-friendly activities, this solo adult getaway was strictly focused on a fun girls’ trip vibe—great coffee, incredible food, local shopping, and iconic views. Here is the exact itinerary I used for a weekend in Chicago, no PTO needed!
Friday Night: Late Arrival & French-Inspired Dining in Fulton Market
1. The Zero-PTO Travel Hack
To pull this off without taking leave, I booked a late afternoon flight on a Friday. Working through my lunch hour allowed me to slip out early, head straight to the airport, and land in Chicago by 5:00 PM.
Pro Travel Tip: When flying into Chicago for a quick downtown stay, fly into Midway (MDW) if possible. It’s closer to the city center than O’Hare, making train transfers fast and budget-friendly.
2. Check-In at The Loop
Because I planned to rely heavily on public transit, location was everything. I stayed at the Hyatt Centric The Loop, which put me steps away from major CTA train lines. The train ride from Midway straight to the hotel was effortless and cost only $3.00.
3. Dinner at Creepies & Strolling Restaurant Row
After a quick outfit change, I met up with my longtime Chicago friend for dinner at Creepies, a chic, French-inspired spot.
-
Must-Try Dishes: The brie-filled gougères and the Parisian gnocchi.
After dinner, we took a leisurely walk through the West Loop’s famous Restaurant Row to soak in the Friday night energy before taking a short Uber back to the hotel.
Saturday: Iconic Sights, Hidden Gems, Italian Beef & Lake Sunset
1. Beat the Crowds at Millennium Park
Being an early riser paid off big time. I headed out early to Millennium Park and caught Cloud Gate (AKA “The Bean”), the Crown Fountain, and the Millennium Monument without the usual midday tourist crowds. Having these spots practically to yourself makes for incredible photos but also just a moment of peace in a bustling city.
2. Inventive Coffee & Pandemic Pop-Up Bagels
Next, we hopped on the CTA train for a two-step morning fuel-up:
-
Drip Collective: Known for unique flavor profiles. I had the Banana Miso Latte, and my friend tried the Ube Latte—both were phenomenal.
-
Tilly Bagel Shop: Born out of pandemic pop-ups, this shop serves some of the best fresh-baked bagels in the city.
3. Garfield Park Conservatory (Botanical Reciprocity Hack!)
With full bellies, we took the train to the Garfield Park Conservatory. While slightly outside the city center, it is 100% worth the trip. It’s a tranquil oasis filled with thriving plant species from across the globe.
-
Highlight: The Desert Section and the outdoor vegetable gardens.
-
Budget Tip: General entry is $10, but if you hold a membership to a local botanical garden (like the Dallas Arboretum), you get free reciprocal entry through the American Horticultural Society network!
4. Boutique Shopping in Bucktown / Logan Square
My local friend led the way to a few iconic local shops:
-
L.A. Burdick Chocolates: Famous for their adorable hand-crafted chocolate mice (an easy souvenir to bring home to the kids).
-
Alice and Wonder: A stylish spot for Chicago-inspired fashion, where I picked up the cutest baseball cap for my toddler.
-
P.O.S.H.: A dream store full of European vintage, hotel silver, and flea market treasures.
5. Living Out “The Bear” at Mr. Beef
If you are a fan of FX’s The Bear, a visit to Mr. Beef on Orleans is mandatory. This is the real-life institution featured in the show, and the atmosphere lives up to the hype.
-
The Verdict: The Italian Beef sandwich is a total steal at $11 and was great. There are many places to grab an Italian Beef though, so if you aren’t a fan of the show, you may be better off going somewhere else where the lines are shorter!
-
Fair Warning: Expect long lines on weekends—we waited about an hour in total, but it was worth every minute.
- Pro Alternative: If you’re want to skip the hour-long line or perhaps don’t care for a beef sandwich, head to Portillo’s instead! You can grab a classic Chicago-style hot dog instead with a fraction of the wait time.
6. Middle Eastern Lattes at Oud Cafe
After waiting in line and eating a heavy lunch, we needed a mid-afternoon recharge. We stepped into Oud Coffee & Cafe, a Palestinian-owned cafe, to rest our feet. I ordered the signature Oud Latte—a complex, refreshing blend of cardamom, pistachio, and fresh mint.
7. Lake Michigan Sunset Cruise
If there is one non-negotiable activity in Chicago, it’s getting out on the water. I had done the classic Architecture River Cruise on a past trip (which I also highly recommend), so this time we opted for a Lake Michigan Sunset Cruise. We got lucky with clear weather, and watching the city skyline light up as the sun dipped below the horizon was the absolute highlight of the trip.
8. Chicago Tavern-Style Pizza at Zarella’s
The cruise wrapped up around 7:45 PM, just in time for our 8:15 PM dinner reservation at Zarella Pizzeria.
While visitors always gravitate toward deep dish, most locals will tell you Tavern-Style Pizza is the true Chicago staple. The ultra-thin, cracker-like crust means you get all the crispiness and flavor without feeling overly weighed down.
-
Order Recommendations: The Vodka Sauce Tavern Pizza, plus fried calamari and zucchini fritters to start.
Sunday: Specialty Lattes, Leisurely Brunch & Easy Departures
1. Tabeeb Coffee & Riverwalk Stroll
For my final morning, I grabbed a coffee at Tabeeb Roasters, another incredible Palestinian-owned spot in the city. I ordered a Cardamom Latte alongside a Za’atar Nutella Donut—an unexpected sweet-and-savory combination that completely blew me away. I took my treat for a peaceful morning walk along the Chicago Riverwalk before checking out of the hotel.
2. Brunch at The Publican & Milk Bar Treats
I took the train over to Fulton Market for a long, relaxed brunch at The Publican. Their pastry basket is remarkable, and the bottomless drip coffee keeps the morning moving nicely.
After brunch, I popped into Milk Bar for some sweet treats to pack in my bag and walked past The Hoxton Hotel (definitely bookmarking this stylish spot for my next stay!).
3. Flight Home via O’Hare
Since I was flying out of O’Hare (ORD) in the mid-afternoon, I opted for an Uber straight to the airport to save time, wrapping up a whirlwind 48 hours in the windy city!
Have Extra Time? More Chicago Highlights to Add
While doing a short weekend in Chicago with no PTO is doable, I’d recommend 1-2 extra days if you can swing it, because there truly is so much to do and see in this underrated city! If you have a 3-day weekend or can extend your stay, here are a few more favorite spots from previous trips:
-
Catch a Baseball Game at Wrigley Field: Experience iconic Chicago sports culture by taking in a Cubs game at one of the oldest and most historic ballparks in America.
-
The Art Institute of Chicago: One of the oldest and largest art museums in the country with an incredible Impressionist collection.
-
Lincoln Park Zoo: Completely free to enter, family-friendly, and frequently hosts evening adult events.
-
Catch a Show: From Second City comedy shows to Broadway in Chicago or live jazz, the theater scene is world-class.
-
Navy Pier: A bit touristy, but offers brilliant vantage points of the lakefront.
-
Willis Tower Skydeck: If you aren’t afraid of heights, stepping out onto “The Ledge” glass balcony offers panoramic views of four states.
