Are you wondering what to pack in a carry-on with a baby? Flying with kids used to feel overwhelming—until I realized it’s not about packing more, it’s about packing the right things in the right place.
After traveling multiple times with a baby and toddler, I’ve found a simple carry-on system that helps keep flights calm, manageable, and (mostly) meltdown-free.
This isn’t everything we pack for a trip—just what we bring on the plane to get through travel days smoothly.
If you’re wondering what to pack in a carry-on with a baby, the goal isn’t to bring everything—it’s to bring the right essentials that keep your child comfortable, entertained, and well-fed during the flight.

✈️ My Carry-On Rule for Flying with Kids
I always assume delays, messes, and boredom will happen—so I pack for what will actually help us get through the flight calmly, not perfectly.
Baby Carry-On Essentials:
🍼 Feeding & Comfort
For babies, feeding and comfort items are non-negotiable. These are the things that make the biggest difference during a flight.
- Manual or electric breast pump (if needed)
- I have this manual pump for emergencies, if I need to quickly deal with mild engorgement
- After breastfeeding two kids for over a year each and trying 4 different breast pumps — This wearable pump is my favorite on the go option
- 1–2 bottles
- Pump wipes
- Nursing cover
- Portable bottle warmer (Love this one to help keep milk warm or cold!)
🍎 Snacks (the real MVP)
Snacks are easily the most important part of our carry-on.
I always pack more than I think we’ll need—because snacks solve boredom, delays, and most mid-flight meltdowns.
For babies, we usually bring:
- Pouches
- Yogurt melts
- Teething crackers
- Easy, familiar favorites
😴 Sleep Essentials
Even if your child doesn’t fully nap on the plane, having familiar sleep items helps them stay calm and regulated.
- Noise-reducing earmuffs (this was a huge lifesaver on our trip to Italy to help our then 7 month old immediately calm down and not be distracted by all the sounds around him)
- Sleep sack (if they use one)
- Pacifier (bring extras if your baby takes one – nothing worse than losing your only pacifier)
- Portable sound machine
- Lovey/blanket
🧷 Diapering Essentials
This is one area where I always over prepare just a little. Because being without these essentials in the case of an accident is a worst case scenario on a plane
- Diapers (rule of thumb: one per hour of travel + a few extras)
- Wipes (I usually just bring a full pack)
- Rash cream
- 1–2 spare outfits (more for longer flights)
Pro tip: I always keep one full change of clothes easily accessible—not buried in the bag.
🧸 Entertainment (keep it simple)
I used to overpack toys, but I’ve found that a few simple, engaging items work much better.
- Small suction toys (like spinners)
- Small, lightweight books (like these)
- A few Magnatiles
- A simple toy car
🧼 Health & Hygiene
With kids, you always need to be prepared for potential messes or illnesses with a few basics. You can’t prepare for everything but having these items helps in most cases.
- Baby medications (if needed; especially Tylenol or Motrin or ear pain that they can often get during the flight)
- Sanitizing wipes
- Hand sanitizer
- Band-Aids (double as “stickers” for play)
Toddler Carry-On Essentials
In addition to all the basics already bringing for the baby — for toddlers, we usually bring:
- The secret weapon – Snack Spinner! She loves this thing and we fill it with assorted snacks like Goldfish crackers, fresh/dried fruit, cut up cheese sticks, nuts, etc
- Granola bars
- A few special treats (lollipops or fruit snacks)
- Water bottle
Honestly, after age 3 I’ve found the only “toy” the really use is a fully charged tablet and headphones. But we do bring a few other items as well in case she get’s tired of the tablet.
- Tablet + headphones (we download a few educational games and some of her favorite shows/movies ahead of the flight)
- Water Wow books or mess-free coloring
- Wiki Stix
👩👧 What I Pack for Myself (Parents)
It’s easy to focus on the kids and forget about your own comfort—I don’t plan to get any relaxing time or sleep time on flights, but do download a couple podcasts or audiobooks that I can listen to hands-free, in case the kids are occupied and I have some time.
- Change of clothes (at least for one parent)
- Headphones / AirPods
- Portable charger
- Light layer (scarf or jacket)
- Lip balm + lotion
- Snacks (You deserve a snack too! we usually pick out a fun treat for ourselves before we fly)
✨ What I Always Make Sure to Pack
If I had to narrow it down, these are the items that consistently make travel easier for us:
- Snacks (more than you think you need)
- A portable sound machine
- A few simple toys
- Tablet/headphones for older toddlers
- A full change of clothes for everyone
✈️ What I Don’t Pack Anymore
I used to bring way too many toys and “just in case” items.
Now I keep it simple—fewer items, but ones I know my kids will actually use.
That shift alone has made travel days feel so much easier.
